Forget the horse meat scandal in the UK…a study conducted by Stellenbosch University has discovered that donkey, goat and water buffalo were found in up to 68% of South African meat products tested. The shocking study also revealed that there was high levels of meat substitution with pork (37%) and chicken (23%) being the most commonly detected in products that were not supposed to contain them.
So when you thought that the burger tasted like ass you may not have been far off.
I knew when the horse meat scandal hit the UK there would sooner or later be a similar case in South Africa. Just didn’t expect it to include waterbuffalo, donkey and goats.
Way to go South Africa…horsemeat is for amateurs.
“There’s a fair share of fraudulent meat products on the South African market, according to a new study by meat scientists from Stellenbosch University.
The study found that anything from soya, donkey, goat and water buffalo were to be found in up to 68% of the 139 minced meats, burger patties, deli meats, sausages and dried meats that were tested. In other cases, even undeclared plant matter was detected.”
“The study was published in the international Food Control journal, and was done by Dr Donna-Maree Cawthorn and Prof. Louw Hoffman of the Stellenbosch University Department of Animal Sciences, in conjunction with Harris Steinman of the Food & Allergy Consulting & Testing Services (F.A.C.T.S) in Milnerton.” [more HERE]
