• Footage of Cape Town skateboarder setting off Kloof Nek speed camera goes viral [video]
Posted by on Feb 5th, 2013

Ya hey…if you live in Cape Town then you will know that Kloof Nek road going from the city over to Camps Bay is rather steep and running up that hill will murder your legs. Going down Kloof is not that bad…unless of course you’re on a skateboard going fast enough to set off the high-speed camera. That exactly what some chap did and footage of his fearless ride is going viral. The speed limit is 60 kmph.

At the very least he’s going 60kmph and apparently those cameras are only set to go off around 70kmph. Lots of talk also around whether it was actually the skater or the chase camera vehicle that set it off, but i’m told that you can’t see the flash go off if you’re going faster than the speed limit so the vehicle would never have captured it unless it was from the skater.

Anyways…we digressing here. Bottom line is that the dude had big enough balls to go do Kloof Nek on a skateboard…in traffic.

    Mental.

    Who is that dude?

Saw this yesterday and said to my mate that the dude gets credit for being a good skater, but that’s all. What he did is reckless and stupid. One error or stone and he could easily end up under a car and beside his probable death, what happens if it causes a bigger accident where someone else dies trying to avoid him?

Seriously now? I nearly got wiped out twice on my way home yesterday by people not checking before changing lanes. A dude on his skateboard is the least of this cities traffic concerns…

Hey dude, you have pretty big chestnuts, but you deserve to live. Do this out of a plane, over the Zambezi or in the sea, please man. Have you tried sky-surfing? No conflict with machines up there.

On that pause screen before you start the video, you can clearly see the contact strips running across the white arrow on the road IN FRONT of the car, i.e. the car has yet to reach the contact strips. The contact strips reflect the flash. Therefore it has to be the skater going across the strips. I think taxis going down Kloof Road at that speed are far more wreckless then Decio, I have seen those taxis moer down that hill with 50 people squashed in them.

Bottom line, oke is nuts. And all those skaters saying “they ruined it for the rest of us” maybe this is the exposure the sport needs in order to give you guys that event that you all hope for on one of these lovely hills. Thank the guy ffs!

credit to this guy doing it aswell as the camera man….

so please don`t throw stones to the skateboarder guys
he only LOVE what he is doing
after-all this is a new South Africa
    lets support him ! !

    Freaking awesome!!!!

Let the world stand up and see….

I agree with David, it takes a few brave okes to lead the pack. Stuff like this is sure to attract some attention to the sport and hey, if nothing else, hats off to Marcio for showing that nothing will stand in the way of our young people making a point.

I’m a parent of 3 kids and personally I think it takes a lot of gumption to follow your passion.

Go make a difference out there!!!

    WOW…WOW…WOW…WOW

Decio Lourenc’o definitely has some big balls !

Congratulations – he made it look so easy !

But on another note – this was highly dangerous and a disclaimer should be added to this video so that schoolkids and others do not try it.

    Hopefully something doesn’t go wrong.

“i’m told that you can’t see the flash go off if you’re going faster than the speed limit” – If you believe this you are an idiot, for by your logic you SHOULD see the flash if you are NOT going beyond the speed limit, in which case there is no need to take your photograph derp

Just want to clarify, if you don’t see the light, then the light didnt hit your vehicle, aka no photograph :)
