CONFIRMED: Blackberry 10 in SA will do away with flat-rate unlimited data packages
Posted by on Jan 30th, 2013

Now before you start losing your sh*t and crying that Blackberry is doing away with the R59/month subscription, take a moment…calm down, breathe and let’s try to understand this shall we. First things first…it’s only the new Blackberry 10 devices which will undergo BIS changes due to the new operating system. So your current device will still be fine. You will still be able to do exactly what you’re doing now. Secondly…should you get a new Blackberry 10 device, bare in mind that all your mates with iPhones and Samsung Galaxy’s etc. have been paying for data packages all this time and they havn’t suffered a life ending crisis.

This from the tech savvy folks at  Mybroadband who managed to get 8ta to spill some beans on the BIS changes.

“Subscription charges on the popular BIS data packages (hence the unlimited, flat-rated data packages) will fall away with the BlackBerry 10 operating system.”

“8ta said that it will be offering a range of data and voice packages to cater for the varied needs of BlackBerry 10 users.” [more HERE]

Ok so it doesn’t come as a surprise since it has already been mentioned in the press way back in May 2012 that BlackBerry 10 devices would no longer access the BlackBerry servers as they do now and that while the BBM service will still use BIS, other data services like web surfing will use regular Internet APN (Access Point Name).

Which means BB 10 users will have to buy data bundles just like the iPhone/Samsung brigade.

How will this affect Blackberry in SA? We’ll just have to wait and see hey.

What do you think? Will this new development affect your decision to buy the Blackberry 10 devices?

Specs, features and demo videos HERE.

So to confirm, BB10 will still have BBM, of course, and it will use BIS. But using BIS uses data? So BBM is charged or just no more free browsing whatsapping apping etc?
Talking in circles here. :/ Is BBM itself still free? And then just the rest of the unlimited package falls away?

Mmmm, that was my only reason for not going to Android.

BB has signed it’s own death warrent, infact they signed it a while ago, now its just being implemented. The reign of BB is over and Iphone is taking some rap also with their high prices. Samsung, you go boy, Google and you guys have done something fantastic. No restrictions, no limits and not telling us what we might and might not download. Oh, almost forgot, with SD card and mini USB, uhmm, sorry competition, but Android is now taking over this race…

Yeah I agree. Blackberry and Blackberry ZA has just lost a whole host of people incl myself who won’t bother renewing their contracts for the BB 10. Would rather get the iPhone 5 or Samsung and just connect to wifi at home and work. Then for in between will get a small data package to use or connect to hot spots. BB has inferior hard ware and soft ware so whats the point? BB 10 was supposed to put BB back in the race but really whats the point if you take away its best attraction.

i have owned samsung galaxies and many different kinds of bbs…
the only reason as to why i use blackberry over android is because of the unlimited package data usage…

now that bb is doing away with BIS.. i suppose then it would just be better to convert back to galaxy seeing as galaxy is more user friendly and in total way better than blackberry…

i rate when new bb devices start getting the bb 10 software.. the sales of blackberry will indefinitely decrease as samsung and htc increase…

thats just my opinion… oh well
