Right, i wasn’t gonna write anything about this over the weekend, but several people have sent it to me asking what the deal is so i’m gonna throw in my 2 cents. If you’re not following the story then let me get you up to speed…basically an article by Justin Harrison HERE on Sunday claimed that Woolworths blatantly posted ads for job opportunities on their career site that were exclusive of whites. Harrison who has has a huge Facebook and Twitter following requested a public apology from Woolworths and unless they reversed this policy he would be calling on all South Africans who oppose racism to boycott the company.
Needless to say the article has resulted in a media sh*t storm and the Woolworths Facebook page is being bombarded with rather unsavoury comments from folks saying they will never shop there again and blah blah blah.
Even Steve Hofmeyr saw an opportunity to get his Malema on and said that he won’t be going to Woolworths any more.
Woolies with one ‘l’ Steve.
Anyways..the backlash against Woolworths prompted the company to release a statement earlier to clear things up.
Digital editor at Woolworths, Sam Wilson was one several employees who came to the companies defence and said the racist employment claims are 100% untrue.
So is Woolworths blatantly excluding whites or is it just complying with the Employment Equity Act and BEE principles?
Hold that thought while i go to Woolies and get me a chicken mushroom pie and a chocolate mousse.
Trade union, Solidarity, has given Woolworths an ultimatum and are demanding that open all job positions to all race groups or face action.
“Solidarity demands that the group amend the advertisements before noon on Wednesday… The Employment Equity Act does not make provision for the exclusion of any race as far as applications are concerned.” [iol]
