A 5.1 meter great white shark has been caught and tagged in Struisbaai by Chris Fischer and his Osearch Research team. The shark is the biggest ever to be caught and tagged in South Africa. Fischer and his team were allowed to continue their research after their permits were reinstated following the death of body boarder David Lilienfeld.
I shall call him squishy and he shall be mine.
“Cape Town shark scientist Alison Kock said in an e-mail from the vessel yesterday: “The 5.1m is the largest shark tagged on the expedition, an incredible animal in excellent condition. She had what looked to be healed mating bites on her flank. The tagging of these three large sharks in Struisbaai has meant we have filled the gap in our study of tagging near-mature and mature sharks. We couldn’t have asked for a better ending to the expedition.” [Cape Times]
5.1 meters is rather large hey. To put things into perspective that’s about the length of a minibus taxi.
