• Breaking News: Huge ship runs aground on Clifton 1st beach [exclusive pic]
Posted by on May 12th, 2012

A huge ship has run aground on the rocks just off Clifton 1st beach in Cape Town.

It’s misty, but here is the first exclusive pic of the shipwreck taken this morning at 8am. Police stopped me from going down onto to the beach and i overheard them say they didn’t want a massive crowd coming to the area. They didnt even want residents going down. The image was taken just at the top of the stairs going down to Clifton 1st.

I’m sure better pics will emerge later.

If you have further info regarding the name, where the ship is from or what the cargo is lemme know. Hopefully it doesn’t result in an oil spill.

    [thanks R]

UPDATE: the mist has lifted and i’ve been sent a ton of new pics, but i like this one taken by Girl About Town, Carey Townsend, which puts everything into perspective.

    Thanks @GirlAbtTwn.

UPDATE 2: The ship is a Japanese trawler that ran agound at 4am in heavy mist. More details HERE.

Apparently it’s a Japanese fishing trawler… hmm, quite far from the Far East I would think!

Apparently it’s a Chinese fishing trawler – if they have a load residents can expect to smell something fishy for a while.

Hope nobody was injured, the mist was thick here this morning in CTown and then cleared to be a beautiful day. The crowds will more than likley descend on Clifton tomorrow.
