Bob Skinstad’s live on-air ‘coconut’ comment called derogatory by viewers
Posted by on Apr 23rd, 2012

Ok so on Saturday former Springbok and now Supersport commentator, Bob Skinstad, was covering the Sharks vs Chiefs game and made an on-air comment which has been labelled derogatory because it used a racist term.

And what was it Bob said.

“Lelia Masaga has gone head high in an absolute coconut tackle straight on to Lwazi Mvovo and tried to take his head off,”

That promted several users on Twitter to voice their disapproval including Chiefs loose forward and All Black , Scott Waldrom who tweeted the following.

Skinstad replied “Never seen it like that, heard the term and thought it meant aiming for the ‘nut’ – no harm meant, sorry.”

Other users had the following to say.

Skinstad has since apologised HERE for using the ‘coconut tackle’ description, but i thought it’s worth pointing out that  Mike @Bronco_NRL was very quick to shoot his mouth off about a clearly unintentional call from Skinstad and yet feels it’s ok to say stuff like this on his Twitter feed.

Ya..we should all go bug that twat and make him apologise for being a douchebag.

Have to say I have never heard that used in a derogatory sense. I have, in ZA, heard coconut used before to refer to a black guy who is supposedly white on the inside. I suspect, depending on where you come from and who is calling someone a coconut, it could either be a compliment or an insult. Bob apologised, owned up for being unaware and the matter should be left there.

I am a black person and I see nothing wrong with what Bob said, when he said it… In fact I found it funny….

I think people should just let it go…
