The power of social media has possibly saved the life of man in Johannesburg who was located when news spread on Twitter that he was trapped in the boot of his car after two armed men had hijacked his Golf.
The hijackers had stuffed him in the boot on Saturday and forgot to remove his cellphone. He sent an SMS to his girlfriend who took to Twitter to ask for help. It was soon retweeted by friend Tanisha Reddy who made sure to mention popular twitter account @PigSpotter . It wasn’t long before tracking companies, a K9 law enforcement agency and Riga Rescue were involved who combined efforts to track the active cellphone and set up road blocks. 2 hours after the first tweet was sent out the hijackers ran into a roadblock and abandoned the vehicle. The owner was found alive.
Outstanding work from all parties involved.
“An sms and social network frenzy saved a Joburg man who was trapped in his car boot after being hijacked at the weekend. “
“Friend Tanisha Reddy took it viral minutes later, sending the message to notorious cyber police basher and roadblock exposer PigSpotter.
“Please RT @PigSpotter my friend was just hijacked and is in the boot of his car, Honeydew area reg no DSS041GP Golf 3 maroon in colour (sic)”.
He listened, and the cry for help was retweeted again and again by PigSpotter’s more than 109 000 followers – including members of the private security industry.
They immediately began rallying their resources.” [iol]
Nicely done Tanisha.
