WP rugby set to quit Newlands and make the move to the Cape Town Stadium
Posted by on Mar 16th, 2012

The WP Rugby Football Union has finally decided to meet with the City of Cape Town and an “agreement had been reached to start formal discussions” to make the move from Newlands rugby ground to the Cape Town stadium in Green Point.

Newlands has always been the home of rugby and it will be sad to see it move from the slopes of Table Mountain to the new stadium, but its about damn time that the WPRFU take the move seriously. CT stadium is modern, bigger and all round a better venue. It doesn’t have the tradition Newlands has, but hey give it some time. And it’s not like Newlands is just gonna stand there as an empty relic…the real estate will be snapped up in no time.

Don’t expect the move to happen overnight though.

WPRFU president Tobie Titus said it’s likely to take years.

“Western Province Rugby took a step closer to a permanent move to the Cape Town stadium with the announcement yesterday that the union and the city were entering formal talks for Green Point to become rugby’s new home.”

“The city and the union will now establish a number of technical teams to deal with a range of issues that need to be resolved before a possible move can be considered.

No time frame was set for the move but WPRFU president Tobie Titus said the process would be lengthy.”This is not an event; it is a process. It is not about us, but about the community we [serve].

“It is not an overnight issue. People need to have patience and respect the process we have embarked on. It is not going to be a matter of months. It will be years.” [TimesLIVE]

As much as i think it will be sad to see WP rugby move from Newlands i reckon it’s a wise decision, but there will be plenty of debate around the braai as to whether it’s a popular choice or not.

What do you think?

Are you i favour of the move or not?

I’m going to fetch it far…

I went to Paarl Boys High. It’s a top Rugby school and probably one of the top 10 academic schools in the country along with Paarl Gym, Paul Roos, Bishops, Grey College, Affies etc. These schools have and will always be in the top ten. There’s a reason for that and its called Old Boys. Without the Old Boys you lose the tradition, and without tradition you lose pride, without pride you lose moral values and you end up with just an ordinary public school.

Now. WPRU has pretty much cut themselves loose of all these values through mismanagement and people I know has given up there season tickets after 35years because of it. WPRU hasn’t seen a trophy in more than 11 years in any competition and no one really cares cause there’ll always be a next season. The move to Cape Town stadium will be a financial gain to WPRU but the true asset lost will be much greater. We’re slowly becoming that ordinary public school.
