SA Blog Awards 2011 public voting opens…with an unexpected change
Posted by on Nov 1st, 2011

Ok so a couple of weeks back i told you that Life is Savage was gonna enter the South African Blog Awards 2011 and attempt to bring home some silverware HERE. Considering that i butchered the 2010 entry i was actually rather amped for this years awards, especially since they simplified things (a tad too much in some cases) and made the process easier for the public to vote.

Then last night i recieve an email with my entry badge along with the previously unheard of criteria that during the public voting phase the process allows voters to “to vote for only one blog per category”.

Huh?!!!!

Should a voter decide to vote for another blog in the same category the original vote will fall away.

Again…huh?!!!!

How is this making life simpler for voters? They are now forced to choose between blogs in the same catergory that they may like equally, but for different reasons. The food and wine category for example … some blogs specialise in food and others in wine only. I may enjoy both, but with that restriction in place i can only vote for one of them.

And why are they only now telling registered bloggers this criteria. Surely it should have been clearly stated from the start. These are the rules and restrictions for the public voting phase as stated on the SA Blog Awards website.

Not to sure what number 3 means exactly, but i see no reference to the new process whereby voters can “vote for only one blog per category”. As far as my understanding goes, rule number 2 was created because last year one of the biggest gripes was the fact that the public was allowed to vote every 24 hours. Thankfully they’ve done away with that f**kery and this year allowed voters to cast only one vote for your favourite blog. I’m fine with that, but why did the organisers feel it was neccessary to stop the public from voting for many blogs in the same category? And why wasn’t it clearly mentioned?

Would be nice if someone from the SA Blog Awards can clear this up. Oh and i know i’m not allowed to modify my vote badge, but as you can see in the right sidebar  it’s slightly too large. Can i get one that fits maybe!?

If you’re a fellow blogger then leave a comment if you think i’ve got this all wrong or if you’re unhappy with the new restriction.

I just inserted a “width=180″ directive inside the tags in the code they gave us to shrink the image slightly to fit our blog margin. Is that modifying it? :)

I think you’re spot on regarding only voting once per category – not intuitive and unless they plan to notify people when they cast their second vote – something along the lines of “Do you realise this will cancel out the first vote you made in this category?” it’s going to have many unintended consequences…

We so pissed off, we pulling out. It’s bull crapper!

Great post brother and as long as I keep loving what MyCityByNight, Nash, Seth & you keep doing, I am not letting fans and readers choose, cos guess what… THEY READ ALL OF US!!!!

I know for a fact that ‘target’ and ‘style’ mods will not affect shit, but the fact they put DO NOT MODIFY etc makes you wonder and then doubt.

Anyway as i tweeted, we abstain as its a joke and really dont need to make our readers choose. I mean i read more than 1 blog and would want to vite for at least 2 of them, but i cant! It’s bull and they can eat a dick!

:D

Happy days and happy place touching!

Gotta say I’m starting to agree with Stacky – looking like it’s going to turn into a silly little slag fest again.

I wanted to vote for us, Savage, MCBN, LazyGamer, and one or two other sites I visit regularly and find that we’re all in the same category – Lifestyle/Entertainment. We’re in there only because it was the most generic to us at BlaBla.

(That in it’s own way was a little irritating – where in the Bloggers Handbook for Dumb Folk does it say that I have to have a blog that focuses on a specific niche? I like a lot of stuff, and cover many topics from tech, to sport, to music, to politics, to local news, and then some. Why no Multi-Topic category? Why all the hate?)

The other problem I have is that only 3 sites in each category will be recognised as finalists. No indication of recognition for other sites placing in the Top 10, etc. With BlaBla in what is probably one of the most well subscribed categories, there’s little chance that my little corner of the world will get anywhere near the Top 3, so why should I bother?

Also, like Rikki says, it took a good number of hours for the confirmation email to come through for the one or two votes I’ve made today.

We’re thinking now that we’ll leave the badge up for the week of public voting and that’s about it. No big hullabaloo, pushing our readers to vote for us, retweeting the post every hour, nonsense like that.

While I appreciate the efforts and changes made after last years’ fun and games, I’m wondering where the benefits may be for us?

[...] the same category without forfeiting your previous vote (check out the full story here on our mate Life is Savage and his blog). This was a major contributing factor in our decision to abstain from this [...]

By the by, never got a confirmation email from those jokers at SA Blog awards for voting for you??

I think the voting is perfect.

It’s pointless voting for more than one blog in a category because you’re trying to find out which is the BEST blog in that category. Voting for 5 blogs in one category gives none of them an advantage by getting your vote.
