Vodacom BlackBerry users in SA to be punished if you use more than 3MB/day! [WTF]
Posted by on Sep 12th, 2011

I let out a proper WTF when i just read that if you have a Blackberry in South Africa with a Vodacom subscription and use more than 100MB of data per month they will classify you as an ‘abuser’ and throttle your connection speed from 3G to 2G.

100MB/month…say what now. That’s under 4MB  a day! If i’m not mistaken that’s a couple of emails, a few tweets, checking Facebook and you’re over the limit. You hear that sound?…that’s the sound of Vodacom taking a gigantic dump on your head.

The only reason i have a BlackBerry with Vodacom is because for the R59 monthly subscription fee i get BBM and unlimited on-device browsing. Key word being ‘unlimited”. This is awesome.

Downgrading my connection speed because i use more than 100 MB/month is not awesome.

It is down right retarded.

“Vodacom today (12 September 2011) announced that they have introduced a data capping system on their BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS), where high-end users’ speeds will be throttled.

Vodacom announced in a press statement that they have studied usage patterns to better understand the causes of congestion at peak times, and one finding was that more than 95% of BlackBerry data usage was attributable to less than 5% of users.”

“Vodacom explained that Blackberry Internet Service users who have reached the 100MB threshold per month will have their connection speed reduced from 3G to 2G levels” [MyBroadband]

Way to go Vodacom….us BlackBerry users already have to deal with the iPhone brigade and now you pull some dumb sh*t like this.

According to Vodacom’s Twitter account, they equate it to about 12000 tweets. As if that’s all you’d use it for. 4MB a day really isn’t much.

The solution? Get an iPhone 😀

yes but that’s only twitter…what about internet websites. Go browsing and some sites use 1MB just to open the landing page.

Only BIS use will be capped at 100MB/month. Wi-fi is fine…i think!
