Poverty in WHITE South Africa [PICS]..opinion?
Posted by on Jul 11th, 2010

The Big Picture (news in photographs at Boston.com) recently did a story on the poverty amoungst the white population in South Africa and i’m not entirely sure what to make of it hey.

I don’t normally post anything on weekends, but after a friend here in Canada showed me these pictures i felt compelled to throw in my two cents. You see, he was under the impression that everyone who was white in South Africa was wealthy (compared to non-whites). He asked me whether these pictures surprised me and quite frankly….they did.

Those are just 3 of 27 photographs taken by Reuters photographer Finbarr O’Reilly. For the rest of click HERE.

I was aware that poverty exists in all races around South Africa, but i still don’t know what it is about these pictures that convey such emotion.

Maybe one of the comments on the site says it best: “Every once in a while you get a glimpse of reality beyond own your small experience that reminds you: you have no idea.”

What do you make of it?

Why would it surprise you? There is poverty everywhere. The only reason this article is making the news is because of the World Cup. The media has been focusing on the African population and how priviledged the white sector is so they republished these images to make the most of the exposure. I also think that the quality of the photography has alot to do with it. He (O’Reilly) is exceptionally skilled at capturing emotion and if you look at his other sets you can see why people are drawn to his work.
