Friday Q&A: the bicycle problem
Posted by on Mar 26th, 2010

Easy one today..(not nearly as confusing as the Monty Hall problem).

Take an everyday bicycle and balance it so it stands upright (ya whatever..pretend you can). Tie a rope to the pedal and position the pedal at the bottom. Now extend the rope horizontally backwards and pull gently.

Like such:

Which way will the bicycle move?

Conventional wisdom dictates that since its a bicycle , moving the pedal in that direction will make the bike move forward right?

Not so much.

The bicycle will actually go backwards if you pull on the rope.

Explain why and you get a noddy badge.

Click HERE below for the mathematical explanation (good luck trying to understand it though).
