The Green Point Urban Park..[pics]
Posted by on Mar 8th, 2010

Saw this in the paper  (Argus) the other day and i honestly had no idea they were constructing an urban park in the Green Point/Mouille Point area. I just thought it was part of the golf course next to the stadium, but apparently not.

Click that puppy  for the bigger version.

The Urban Park or People’s Park (can’t figure out what to call it yet) is looking pretty sweet already with completion hopefully due in May.

The City of Cape Town is set to unveil a multi-million rand park in the next few months, with officials saying the facility would become a “great inner-city park”, similar to those in cities around the world. [iol.co.za]

Here’s some of the park’s features as far as i can gather:

  • Its 12,5 ha in size
  • It cost R54 million to create
  • Open from sunrise to sunset
  • Play areas for kids, including a special area for the disabled
  • Fitness area with weather-resilient structures
  • Common area to be used for concerts, markets etc
  • Amphitheatre
  • Its surrounded by a cycle track and pedestrian pathways
  • Lots of trees/biodiversity garden and water features
  • 4 entry points

Found an image on the skyscrapercity forum, submitted by Mo Rush that is pretty cool.

Its on the left there. You know what to do if you wanna see a the bigger picture. Pity about the massive tar parking area next to the Virgin gym hey.

Took some snaps on my way to gym this morning. Kind chap allowed me to walk all the way in to the common area. Check it.

My apologies Joanne. I have updated the post and put a link to your blog. Your photographs are amazing. For some bizarre reason i thought that you were actually Mo Rush! If you ever manage to get to the higher floors or roof of one of the buildings in Mouille Point(i tried they kicked me out!), adjacent to the park, to take photo’s let me know and ill gladly let everyone know.

The tar parking area is temporary for the WC, and will be lifted and replaced with grass after the WC. This measure is in place so that the grass is not damaged by vehicles/buses during the WC.
